Blue Sky Solar Racing, 2022–2025
Blue Sky Solar Racing is a student-led team at the University of Toronto that designs solar-powered race vehicles for the 3000 km World Solar Challenge. In 2023, I contributed as both a mechanical subteam member and solar driver, covering over 1200 km during the race. While the car was safe and handled well, it was overengineered and more than 30 kg heavier than leading competitors, leaving us just 30 km short of finishing within the time limit. After the race, I was promoted to mechanical lead. In collaboration with fellow leads and the chief engineer, we identified the suspension system as the most critical area for improvement in our next car, Aurora.
I began the new design cycle by establishing key vehicle parameters—center of gravity, track width, and wheelbase—using a stability model from literature and accounting for packaging constraints. I then developed a MATLAB-based wireframe suspension model with free-body diagrams to evaluate joint forces. I ran over 100 parameter studies to minimize bump steer, scrub, and joint loads while improving cornering stability. With the concept finalized, I recruited and led a team of ten students through a three-month design sprint, guiding the design and ANSYS validation of four suspension arms, the hub and axle, and braking components. The assembled suspension achieved a 32% weight reduction compared to the previous cycle, marking a significant step toward a lighter, more competitive vehicle set to race in the 2026 American Solar Challenge.
